Independent Learning Centre

Secondary school courses are also available through the Independent Learning Centre.

The Independent Learning Centre (ILC), Ontario Ministry of Education, provides a distance education program, in English and in French, for Ontario residents who want to earn secondary school diploma credits, upgrade basic skills, or study for personal development. You can enrol at any time and have one year from the date of enrolment to complete these correspondence courses. There is an administration fee for each course request.

Since September 1999, Contact North/Contact Nord, Northern Ontario's Distance Education & Training Network, provides a community-based contact point for information about ILC courses. Sample courses are available for viewing, and Course Guides and Enrolment forms are on hand. If the secondary school course you need is not available locally or through Contact North/Contact Nord, or if independent study fits your learning style, visit your local Contact North/Contact Nord Distance Education & Training Access Centre and see what ILC has to offer.

The GED

The General Educational Development (GED) testing service is a testing program, in English and in French, for adults seeking high school equivalency. The GED test is actually a set of five tests in the core high school curriculum areas. The tests measure the important knowledge and skills usually acquired during a regular high school program of study. Successful candidates receive an Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate.

ILC is the examiner for GED Tests in Ontario. Information, application forms, and test schedules can be obtained at your local Contact North/Contact Nord Access Centre.
