EDUCATIONAL
AND TRAINING NEEDS, PREFERENCES, AND BARRIERS: A SURVEY OF NORTHERN
ONTARIO RESIDENTS. This survey for the first time investigated the views of Northerners on a variety of issues surrounding distance education. Findings include an increasing awareness of distance education as communities become more remote, a relatively strong perception of the value of additional education for workplace security, acceptance of distance education as a means to that end, and a high degree of participation. One emerging theme is the underlying division between groups who value and seek further education and training at a distance and those who, in spite of significant need, fail to engage in further training, a discrepancy that deliverers of education and training are urged to address. |

USING
VIDEOCONFERENCING AS A MODE OF CURRICULUM DELIVERY FOR LEARNERS WITH
SPECIAL NEEDS IN SMALL AND REMOTE COMMUNITIES.
This publication reports an innovative use of videoconferencing in teaching hearing impaired students via distance education. It represents one of very few publications available that addresses such an application. The untried nature of the approach and the small number of students (three) makes the study, in essence, a record of an initial implementation and provides useful comments for others who may refine such techniques. |

TECHNOLOGY
OUTCOMES FOR STUDENTS: A PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT AND ACCOUNTABILITY
FRAMEWORK. Dr. Knight shares in this publication what he has gained from an investigation of others’ attempts to grapple with the question of which technology outcomes are appropriate for different levels of students. In the process he has formulated a general framework for addressing the issue for any group of educators or administrators faced with the need to clarify the purpose behind major investments in technology education. |
