Introduction

Contact North/Contact Nord is Northern Ontario's Distance Education & Training Network, a non-profit corporation funded by the Government of Ontario.

Founded in 1986, Contact North/Contact Nord has grown into Canada's largest distance education Network, and has a long history of successfully working as a distance education and training consortium of Northern Ontario's colleges, universities, and school boards, under the guidance and direct liaison of the Colleges Branch of Ontario's Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.

Some of our 2001 highlights include:

    • 11,222 college, university, and high school academic registrations representing an increase of 12% over 2000.

    • 85% of registrations in small and remote areas outside of Northern Ontario's urban centres of North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, and Timmins.

    • A growing Network of 145 Distance Education & Training Access Centres across Northern Ontario in 100 communities.

    • Strong strategic partnerships with the private sector, including nine new private sector partners in 2001.

    • Strong relationships with a number of like-minded public sector organizations.

    • Expanding innovative application of technology in learning projects, including the Ontario Learning and Technology Training Labs, two sold out Emerging Technologies conferences focused on showcasing the next generation technologies to close to 1,000 participants from the education, health care, business, municipal, and government sectors in Northern Ontario and across Canada, and a series of briefings on next generation technologies.

    • 15th year of providing a comprehensive faculty training program in distance education, including technology and pedagogy instructor training sessions each fall, winter and spring semester.

    • Active participation with a number of information technology infrastructure development initiatives, including Northern Ontario's community based networks, the Broadband Wireless Multimedia Pilot Project, and the Ontario Research and Innovation Optical Network (ORION).

Based on our experience and expertise in the field of distance education and training, we are pleased to outline how Contact North/Contact Nord will continue to make a substantial contribution to a comprehensive vision and strategy for technology in learning in Ontario which is under consideration.
