January 25, 1999 - New Technology in the Classroom Millennium Awards Program

Contact North/Contact Nord will launch on Thursday, January 28, 1999,
with strategic partners, Bell Canada and ADCOM, a unique and prestigious awards
program aimed at recognizing educators and schools for outstanding achievements
in the effective use of technology in Ontario classrooms.

Minister of Education and Training, the Honourable David Johnson officially
launched the Labs at the Northwest Regional Coordination Centre of Contact North/Contact
Nord in Thunder Bay while the centre was linked via videoconference to the
Northeast Headquarters in Sudbury.

The Honourable Noble
Villeneuve, Minister of
Francophone Affairs, toured the Sudbury Headquarters of Contact North/Contact
Nord on Thursday, February 18, 1999, to learn about the current initiatives
underway to offer increased access to education and training opportunities for
Northern Ontario residents.
March 12, 1999 - Burk’s Falls Welcomes Contact North/Contact Nord
- The official opening of a community centre at Life Experience Alternative School
marks the beginning of opportunities for residents of Burk’s Falls and the
surrounding area to access secondary school and post-secondary courses and
programs without having to travel long distances.
March 12, 1999 - Contact North/Contact Nord Recognized as a World
Leader in Distance Education and Open Learning
- The
Commonwealth of Learning awarded Contact North/Contact Nord its
Anniversary Honour for Institutional Achievement in Distance Education. This
award was one of three presented at the ceremony in Brunei, Darussalam, as part
of the Pan-Commonwealth Forum for Open Learning.
April 6, 1999 - The Internet is Exploding
- Canada is
leading the world in the creation of the next generation Internet. Andrew
Bjerring, the President and CEO of CANARIE Inc., which is leading the
development of the Internet is presenting a briefing on its newest high-speed,
high-bandwidth network, CA*net 3.

latest Internet tools will be explored in a hands-on workshop by
Contact North/Contact Nord.

- Sir John Daniel, Vice-Chancellor of the Open University in
the United Kingdom, briefs senior post-secondary administrators
and policy makers on the role of technology in meeting the next
decade's post-secondary enrolment increase.

9, 1999 - Contact North/Contact Nord and TFO look towards
the Future
- The two organizations signed a cooperation agreement
setting the stage for development of education and media projects
that will broaden access to quality programs by Ontario's French
community.
July 26, 1999 - Contact North/Contact Nord Appoints a New Member to
its Board of Directors
- Caren Gagné of Rutherglen is
the newest Board Member of Northern Ontario’s Distance Education &
Training Network, nominated by the selection committee at the Board’s meeting
in Sioux Lookout last month.
September 3, 1999 - Killarney is Home to the Latest Contact North/Contact
Nord Distance Education & Training Access Centre

Killarney’s St. Joseph’s School of the Sudbury Catholic District School
Board has joined the Contact North/Contact Nord Distance Education &
Training Network of 145 centres in over 100 communities throughout Northern
Ontario.
October 6, 1999 - World’s Most Advanced Audioconference Bridging Technology
Increases Access to Education and Training
- With the
installation of its new COMPUNETIX CONTEX 240 audioconference bridge, Contact
North/Contact Nord launches its second phase of development as Northern
Ontario’s Distance Education & Training Network.
November 8, 1999 - Contact North/Contact Nord Launches on-line PD
Program for Northern Ontario Secondary School Teachers -
The Honourable Janet Ecker, Minister of Education, was in attendance today at
the announcement of the beginning of a new phase in Contact North/Contact
Nord’s professional development program for teachers, Wired for
Learning: Technology Working in the Classroom.
