DR. ROBERTA BONDAR AWARDS FOR OUTSTANDING TEACHERS

Janet Murphy, Toronto District School Board, Toronto ON

Janet Murphy has been the prime initiator for the introduction and implementation of the Knowledge NETwork (KN), the Toronto District School Board’s (TDSB) e-learning resource providing an innovative, 21st century approach to learning. The KN includes a dynamic set of computer-based and web-based training, teaching programs and learning resources on the TDSB Wide Area Network (WAN) and Internet. It provides TDSB students and staff with many opportunities to facilitate learning with relevant IT training, curriculum and professional development support.

The KN is available to TDSB students and staff anytime, anywhere at www.itworks.edu.

The courses are launched using a browser. The resource is accessible over the TDSB WAN, or from the users home via an Internet Service Provider (ISP) using a modem or high-speed access.

Carol Pascuzzo, St. Thomas Aquinas School, Thunder Bay ON

Mrs. Pascuzzo currently teaches grade 3 and 4 at St. Thomas Aquinas School for the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board (designated as a Teacher Development Centre for computer integration). In her capacity as a classroom and computer resource teacher, she assisted school staff in cooperatively creating a vision for the integration of information technology in the curriculum for students to use technology as a tool to broaden and enrich their learning. Working with the staff, a plan was developed to explore the various facets of Claris Works and the Internet, making multi-media presentations and effective use of the Internet a reality. Mrs. Pascuzzo has introduced staff to the use of the digital camera, scanner, television hook up, e-mail and server. She was also instrumental in framing a policy that deals with the ethical use of the computer.

Mrs. Pascuzzo coordinated and posted Internet projects on Winter and Fall poetry for primary students and won a Grassroots grant for the Winter Poetry project. She also authored the school’s web page and set up a process to maintain the site that allows teachers to highlight programs. The web site not only profiles the school but provides sites of interest for staff, students and parents.

Team Teachers Rob Haslam & Fred Somonaitis, Geraldton Composite High School, Geraldton ON

Seven years ago, Technical Chair Fred Simonaitis began to implement a communications program at Geraldton Composite High School. After several years of struggling, a full broadcast studio and graphics lab was built.

Last year, Mr. Haslam and Mr. Simonaitis initiated a partnership with local cable owner John Emmans. In October, the school began a weekly live broadcast of local news and events from the studio in the school to Geraldton and Longlac. Students engaged in the "Knightline" program can earn two credits at the advanced level.
