ANNIVERSARY
HONOURS AWARD FROM
THE COMMONWEALTH OF LEARNING (COL)
Contact North/Contact Nord is the recipient of the Award of
Excellence for Institutional Achievement in Distance Education, one of three
such international designations bestowed by the Commonwealth of Learning (COL)
through its Anniversary Honours program in 1999.
The Institutional Achievement Award is given "...for using innovative
and effective applications of learning technologies that have resulted in a
demonstrable way to reach students who might not have otherwise participated in
the education or training experience."
In announcing the award, COL stated:
The Adjudicators
recognized an institution which has
successfully used a wide range of tailored programming, course delivery and
support methods to meet the educational needs of students from diverse cultural,
socio-economic and language backgrounds in Northern Canada. Supplementation of
the local school curriculum and innovative provision of post-secondary access
has contributed to youth population retention in many isolated communities.
Trades training for women, teaching and consultative services for deaf children
and their families, and technological training programmes for network instructors
indicate the way in which local and specialist needs have been successfully
addressed in a challenging context.
