Maxim
Jean-Louis
is President & Chief Executive Officer of Contact North/Contact
Nord, Northern Ontario’s Distance Education &
Training Network.
A
seasoned executive and leader specializing in technology and
education, distance education and alternative delivery with a
special focus on small and remote communities, Maxim has been
President & Chief Executive Officer of Contact North/Contact
Nord since 1996.
In
addition to his senior management responsibilities at Contact
North/Contact Nord, Maxim serves as Secretary-Treasurer
of the Ontario Research and Innovation Optical Network, Chair
of the Francophone Early Years Steering Committee, Member of
the Inukshuk Partnership Committee, Member, Evaluation
Committee, Heritage Canada and Member, Chair’s Advisory
Council on e-government for the Government of Ontario.
Maxim
also served as Chair of the Broadband Wireless Multimedia
Group and Chair of TECNorth (Telecommunications Expansion
Consortium of Northern Ontario). These two organizations were
responsible for the Broadband Wireless Multimedia Pilot
Project that piloted the use of wireless technologies in
Northern Ontario.
Prior
to assuming his current position, Maxim held a variety of
senior posts with Athabasca University in Alberta from 1980 to
1995 including Director, Marketing and Communications,
Director, Student Services, Head, Student Services and Student
Information Coordinator.
Contact
North/Contact Nord has experienced phenomenal
development and growth since Maxim’s arrival. Activity on
the Contact North/Contact Nord Network has increased
significantly, including over 15% growth in the last year in
course registrations and over 6% growth in courses offered on
the Network.
Under
Maxim’s leadership, Contact North/Contact Nord has
increased the number of Distance Education & Training
Access Centres to 145 in more than 100 small and remote
communities.
Contact
North/Contact Nord has taken a leadership role in
enhancing technology in education throughout Northern Ontario
through a variety of initiatives including the Broadband
Wireless Multimedia Pilot Project, The Ontario Centre for
Excellence in Videoconferencing, active participation in the
Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities efforts to
develop a comprehensive strategy for technology in learning,
the launch of Contact North/Contact Nord’s CEO
Roundtable Series, and the establishment of the Emerging
Technologies Series to bring world class expertise and
technologies to decision-makers in Northern Ontario.
Under
Maxim’s leadership, Contact North/Contact Nord was
the recipient of the Award of Excellence for Institutional
Achievement in Distance Education, one of three such
international designations bestowed by the Commonwealth of
Learning (COL) through its Anniversary Honours program in
1999.
The
Institutional Achievement Award is given "...for using
innovative and effective applications of learning technologies
that have resulted in a demonstrable way to reach students who
might not have otherwise participated in the education or
training experience."
Maxim
has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Alberta
and a Professional Diploma in Education from the University of
Alberta.
Maxim,
his spouse Lise and their two sons make their home in Sudbury.
Outside of his Contact North/Contact Nord
responsibilities, Maxim enjoys spending time with his family
and volunteers with the Rotary Club of Sudbury.
