CENTRE
OF DISTANCE EDUCATION FOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS
Within its organization, Contact North/ Contact Nord recognizes that
the secondary school sector can best be served by its own distinct unit, the
Centre of Distance Education for Secondary Schools. Each of the Centre’s five
components addresses a particular aspect of Network use by students, teachers,
schools or boards.
The Secretariat for Registration and Coordination facilitates matches
between courses delivered on the Network and interested students at any
secondary school within Northern Ontario. Supporting the role of teachers in delivering courses to
students, the Secretariat handles registration, materials distribution, and
record keeping, and provides common procedures for schools offering or receiving
courses.
Professional Development for Secondary School Teachers is offered
through a number of mechanisms. Our new users’ training program provides
teachers with training selections to prepare them for their first experience
with a distance learning environment. A particular emphasis has been given
to the Wired for
Learning: Technology Working in the Classroom program which
offers unique professional development opportunities in a variety of formats for
teachers to learn how to effectively integrate technology in their classrooms
and curriculum.
Our Curriculum Enhancement Program offers resources, consultation and
technical support for teachers or other content experts to adapt their content
and techniques to interactive distance learning materials. We maintain a library
of course materials developed for distance learning and make it available to
school boards offering courses at a distance. We also seek funding to support
these efforts.
Program and Course Enrichment Activities are organized to provide
specialized enrichment opportunities for students. The scope of such initiatives
varies from single presentations by guest experts to comprehensive virtual
exploration of sites, events, or procedures that would be out of the normal
reach of secondary school students.
The Technology in Education Award Program has been established to
recognize and reward outstanding examples of the integration of technologies in
classroom settings. Awarded to teachers, administrators and schools, this
recognition is intended by both French and English applications at the
elementary and secondary school levels.
