CONTACT NORTH/CONTACT NORD ENROLMENT REACHES RECORD HIGH!

Enrolment up by 15%

Contact North/Contact Nord, Northern Ontario’s Distance Education & Training Network, today reported its highest enrolment ever with an impressive 15% growth in registrations in 2001-2002 on the heels of a record growth of 12% in 2000-2001. Close to 13,000 learners from across Northern Ontario were served by Contact North/Contact Nord’s Network of 145 Distance Education & Training Access Centres located in more than 100 small and remote communities.

"For anyone who is motivated to learn, but must care for an older parent or young children at home, distance learning is truly a godsend" says adult learner Jenny Enair of Kirkland Lake, ON. "Through Contact North/Contact Nord, I am currently completing the 3rd semester of a 2-year Teacher Aide diploma. Without Contact North/Contact Nord, attaining my educational goals would be next to impossible."

Full-time and part-time university, college and secondary school academic programs and courses are delivered year-round via the Contact North/Contact Nord Network of audioconferencing, videoconferencing and Internet technologies. In 2001-2002, 581 courses were delivered on the Network, an increase of over 6%, an achievement owed in part to our educational partners’ success in developing and promoting distance learning programs.

"Our enrolment growth has been truly explosive during the past few years", said Maxim Jean-Louis, President and CEO. "For many learners in small and remote communities, Contact North/Contact Nord is the only way they can access quality and relevant programs and courses from Northern Ontario colleges, universities, and school boards. Contact North/Contact Nord’s phenomenal growth reflects our educational partners commitment to the innovative use of technology to increase access to education and training."

As Northern Ontario's Distance Education & Training Network established, governed and administered by Northerners, Contact North/Contact Nord’s mission is to increase and improve affordable and equitable access to quality education and training for Northern Ontario residents, to support regional and community economic development and to promote a culture of lifelong learning.
