FALL 1999 ENROLMENT IS UP AT CONTACT NORTH/CONTACT NORD, NORTHERN ONTARIO’S DISTANCE EDUCATION & TRAINING NETWORK

Distance education is growing in Northern Ontario

Contact North/Contact Nord’s Fall 1999 enrolment is up five percent over Fall 1998.

Debra Betty, Director, Northeast Region, comments, "As a result of our longstanding partnerships with Northern Ontario colleges, universities and secondary schools, our network is connecting more and more residents to full and part-time academic programs and courses."

In 1998, 9,700 students registered in 533 college, university and high school distance education courses.

With 145 Distance Education & Training Access Centres in over 100 communities, Contact North/Contact Nord continues to provide residents of Northern Ontario access to learning opportunities using a variety of information technologies.

"The increase in enrolment", adds Debby Sefton, Director, Northwest Region, "can be attributed to the leadership that our educational partners continue to demonstrate by using innovative methods to deliver programs and courses to residents in small and remote communities."

Contact North/Contact Nord continues to successfully help meet the needs of Northern Ontario residents. In communities throughout Northern Ontario, the network’s Access Centres’ staff actively and tirelessly recruit and support students in their lifelong learning endeavours.

The Bridging the North Winter 2000 course list is now available at local Access Centres.

Contact North/Contact Nord’s mission is to increase and improve affordable and equitable access to quality education and training for Northern Ontario residents, supporting regional and community economic development and a culture of lifelong learning.
